Easy Guide To Creating The Kaleidoscope Effect On Your Photos

By Ann Collins

The world seems to have a natural kaleidoscope feel especially when you gaze into the horizon. This effect is fascinating and when applied gives your images an improved feel. The kaleidoscope effect allows you to form repetitive patterns that are dazzling to the eyes. It is a way of producing a naturally appearing and seamless collage. Here is an easy way of doing it on Photoshop and achieving excellent results.

The hexagon offers an easy and simple shape to base your motif on. It is, in fact, a natural plate to mold your images. On a blank Photoshop page of A4 size, create a hexagon of a convenient size to work with. You are at liberty to increase the number of sides but it might complicate your work. Identify the center by drawing a vertical and diagonal line. The two lines will also be used to construct a triangle.

Create a triangle with its tip at the center of your hexagon. You only need to draw a line to one corner of selected hexagon. The lines used to mark the center will form the other boundary of your triangle. The triangle guides you on the size and shape of patterns to create. Two triangles in one quarter will not be of a similar size but this should not be a bother.

Import your image to Photoshop. Ensure that the photo used is of the highest quality. It should have been cropped to size and any undesirable marks or areas removed. The best, convenient and most common photo formats to use is JPG. Some adjustments that would give you better results include increasing black while reducing white. Make the image as clear as possible before commencing on collage.

The triangle cut from the hexagon is then dragged over the imported image. It helps create the motif of your art. The size of the triangle can be altered to desired size to fit your overall expectations. Identify the area you would like to replicate and move the triangle over it. Position it in a way that allows you to achieve a desirable pattern.

The patterns to be placed over the image are developed on another layer or even imported from another application. There are excellent paint brushes, inking tools and sprays to create your images. The beauty of the pattern developed depends on your creativity. The patterns are made clearer and pronounced by decreasing white and increasing black. All this should happen before applying them on the original image.

With tidy marks in place, paste them on corners of your triangle. They should be placed in duplicate version. The background of these patterns should have been deleted. Add as many patterns as you wish ensuring that the image takes the shape you desire. To achieve a better effect with the shapes, the opacity of the shapes should be increased to 100 percent.

Once the patterns have been placed on the image, extract the triangular section and return it to the hexagon. It is inserted in duplicates with edges that seem to reflect each other. It is these reflections that create the kaleidoscope element. Once the hexagon is filled, it is duplicated just like the triangle until desired size of image is achieved. Crop the resulting image to shape.
