By Jennifer Davis

Walking is a great type of exercise that most people could do during their free time. It does not need any equipment just like in the gyms and you could vary the length depending on what you want or need. It can be done almost anywhere you like but doing it somewhere with fresh air is better such as the parks and nature trails.

Parks have easier pathways when compared to nature trails that normally have uneven and difficult paths which are harder to walk on. Rugged walker or hiking boots are specially designed for these type of terrains that can withstand various conditions and elements which helps in protecting your feet during your hikes. Here are some basic information about them before purchasing one for yourself.

Boots have different types available depending on the trail you will be using it on and the weight of the load you will be carrying as well. Hiking shoes is one of them and they are low cut styled with flexible midsoles good for shorter hikes on easier terrains. They are lighter and is advisable to be used only in shorter duration.

The day hiking boots have mid to high cut styles and are usually used for short backpacking trips. Avoid carrying heavy loads while wearing these because it does not provide enough support for it so carry only lighter ones. The break in time for these is shorter so can wear it comfortably in no time.

Backpacking boots are meant to be used when you are carrying heavy loads and the walking trip takes more than a day. These are good for people who are going into camping in the hills and mountains because of its durability and support. These can also be used in rougher terrains like traveling outside the trail.

The shoe has different components that are made of different materials such as leather and rubber in order to help you walk comfortably while protecting your feet. One of the components is the upper which influences its breathability, durability, water resistance and weight. The next one is midsole which cushions or buffers the foot from shock. The stiffer midsoles are better to use in rougher terrains.

Another component is the outsole which is the bottom part of the shoes and the part that touches the ground usually. The lug patterns on it is used for giving traction and improving the grip in certain conditions. A heel brake is the area of the outsole found in the heel that reduces the likelihood of sliding down during descents.

Boots should snugly fit although it must not be too tight in order to give room for the toes to move. Wear socks that you are planning to use during walks when shoe fitting and do it when the day ends because this is the time when the feet are swelling and in its largest. Doing these would help you prevent yourself from buying shoes which are too small or tight for you.

Walk around the shop while wearing it in order to test its fit and the comfort level it has. Do not use the shoes on long walks immediately and give it time to become more comfortable to wear to prevent your feet from being sore. Purchase the brands that you have worn before when buying online to be able to choose the correct size for you.
