Ideas For Unique Fundraising Events

By Janet Brooks

It is a really special, talented person who feels comfortable asking companies and individuals to donate money to a charitable cause. An effective method of doing this is to hold unique fundraising events which need patrons to attend and participate in the event. The charity's patrons are often more likely to be willing to part with their money if they feel that they have received something of some value in return.

A popular way to raise money for a good cause is a well set up golf tournament. The invited players will play in groups of four, each paying for their place in the tournament. The entry fee, which is usually quite expensive, will go towards the cause. The objective is to have a fun day, with prizes and drinking games along the course. The prizes are donated by supportive corporations and companies and at the end of the entire event, there is a winning four-ball, who will take home a bigger prize.

Eliciting donations of really nice items such as sports memorabilia, artworks or jewellery from donors is the first step when holding an auction for charity. Tickets to the dinner event are then sold off to tables of ten or twenty participants, depending on the size of the venue and event. For the price of the entry, they will get a nice dinner and participate in the auction held over the course of the evening.

Consider holding an art auction where the local artists and street artists are invited to showcase their work. Hire a caricaturist to walk among the patrons, with every portrait being sold and the proceeds going to the charitable cause.

Get local sponsors to donate prizes for a Halloween pumpkin festival. Encourage participation from the surrounding community by allowing people to buy entry to show off their pumpkins which would need to start growing from April. The winning pumpkins would get prizes for various categories, being largest, oddest, ugliest etc. Using holidays as an excuse to raise money can make it an annual community event and the chosen charity can benefit.

Treasure hunts, quiz nights and various similar challenges are a really fun way to bring money into the coffers of any deserving charity. Expert planning is needed for any scavenger hunt to ensure fun, continuity and success. If the cause that is to benefit from the proceeds is a home or shelter of some kind, combine the treasure-seeking with repairs and maintenance to the premises. For example, every clue required to continue on the quest requires that a portion of their garden be tidied.

The motivation for raising funds for a charity is to convince people and companies to hand over money so that another group, such as a children's charity or a community outreach program, can benefit and support its beneficiaries.

The reasons for these occasions are endless, just like the different ways that can be used to raise money. The more unique the method, the more likely it is that peoples interest will be piqued, encouraging them to attend or participate and by doing so
